Intro & today’s top 3 (0:00)

HELLO! Ozghosty here! This is your daily Manly beach report. Today is the 25th of October 2026. Here are today’s top three. Number one: we’ve got the results from yesterday’s Bondi to Manly Ultra. Number two: it’s a scorcher, heading for thirty degrees, but storms are on the way this evening. And number three: Surf + Sound rolls on, with Babe Rainbow at Manly Wharf tonight. I’ll tell you who won the ultra on the walk. But first, the surf and weather.

Beach report: surf & weather (0:35)

Here’s your beach report. Sunny and hot, a top of around thirty, with northerly winds of twenty to thirty k’s. But watch the sky: storms are likely late this afternoon and tonight, and they could be severe, so keep an eye on the Bureau’s warnings. The surf’s around two metres from the nor’east and choppy with that wind, building this evening. The water’s about twenty degrees. Low tide is around twenty past two, high tide around twenty past eight tonight. UV is very high, so slip, slop, slap, and swim between the red and yellow flags.

Local news: Manly ferry incident (1:20)

Now, the local news, starting with a story from the Manly ferry. The Manly Observer reports that at around four o’clock on Friday the 16th of October, as a ferry from Circular Quay was docking at Manly Wharf, a man allegedly rushed the wheelhouse door just as crew were coming out. Crew believe he was affected by drugs, and say he was trying to get to the steering wheel. But another witness told the Observer he was actually going to complain about being splashed during the crossing. According to a witness, the engineer helped hold the man while the captain docked the ferry alone. Then, in the confusion, the gangplanks went down and the man walked off. Police have taken statements and are investigating, and Transdev, which runs the ferries, says its own investigation is underway. The Maritime Union says there’s no place for violence against ferry workers.

More news: new airport, Mona Vale tower (2:35)

In other news, the big one for Sydney today: Western Sydney International Airport has opened to passengers. The first flight, a Jetstar service to the Gold Coast, was due out at eleven this morning, and the first international flight, to Auckland, leaves tomorrow. And up at Mona Vale, a two-hundred-and-ninety-nine-home tower has been given the green light, one of the biggest housing approvals on the Northern Beaches in a while.

On the walk: Queenscliff to North Steyne (3:20)

Look at that crowd. A hot Sunday in late October and half of Sydney’s found its way to the beach. Where are you watching from today? Let me know in the comments.

Bondi to Manly Ultra results (3:45)

So, the ultra. Eighty kilometres from Bondi, around the harbour and up over North Head to finish on this beach. The men’s winner was James Paterson, in six hours, nineteen minutes. And here’s the great bit: he was back in seventh place after twenty k’s, then hit the front around the Spit and never looked back. He was second last year. The women’s race went to Greta Truscott, in seven hours twenty-eight. That’s a marathon, and then nearly another marathon, in one go.

Still to come: everything that’s on in Manly this week. And if you’re enjoying the walk, give it a like. It really helps the channel.

North Steyne (6:21)

We’re into North Steyne now. Somewhere along here is the North Steyne Surf Life Saving Club, one of the oldest surf clubs in the world. If you see the volunteers in red and yellow today, say thanks.

Duke Kahanamoku at Freshwater (7:11)

Here’s a bit of local history. Just over the headland at the north end of the beach is Freshwater. On Christmas Eve, 1914, the Hawaiian swimmer Duke Kahanamoku paddled out there on a board he’d shaped from Aussie timber and showed Sydney how to stand up and ride a wave. It’s widely seen as the moment surfing took off in Australia, and his original board is still kept by the Freshwater surf club.

Surf + Sound tonight (8:16)

Tonight it’s Babe Rainbow, the psychedelic surf-pop band from Byron, at the Felons Barrel Room on Manly Wharf. Doors at seven. And if you’re down at the wharf today, the free Jeremyville art trail and the painted Land Rover Defenders are worth a look.

Coming up this week (9:11)

Coming up this week in Manly. Thursday the 29th: Kita Alexander plays Surf + Sound at the wharf. Friday the 30th: Skunkhour. Saturday the 31st, Halloween: the Queenscliff groms have their Grub Cup from seven in the morning, the free Boardrider Battle kicks off right here on Manly Beach, and Yolanda Be Cool play the wharf that night. And Sunday the 1st of November: day two of the Boardrider Battle, then GANGgajang and Winston Surfshirt close out the festival. Know of something else on in Manly this week? Drop it in the comments, and I’ll give it a shout-out on tomorrow’s walk.

Question of the day (10:26)

Question of the day: how are you spending this scorcher of a Sunday? Beach, pool, or hiding in the air con? Tell me in the comments.
Intro & today’s top 3 (0:00)

HELLO! Ozghosty here! This is your daily Manly beach report. Today is the 24th of October 2026. Here are today’s top three in Manly. Number one: the Bondi to Manly Ultra. Eighty kilometres of coast and harbour, and the finish line is right here on Manly Beach this morning. Number two: the brand-new Surf + Sound festival rolls into its second weekend, with Skegss playing Manly Wharf tonight. And number three: the Queenscliff Boardriders have their juniors out on the sand at the north end. I’ll tell you more about all of those on the walk, and stick around to the end for the surf and weather report.

Local news (0:45)

Now, the local news. Big music news for the Northern Beaches: Dee Why Beach is getting a new festival called Aloha, on Saturday the 6th of March next year. Organisers are expecting up to fifteen thousand people, which they say would make it the biggest music festival ever held on the Northern Beaches. Wolfmother, Ball Park Music and Yothu Yindi are headlining, and general tickets go on sale this Monday. A bit of glamour is coming too. Chanel is holding a private event at Shelly Beach on the 4th of November to show off its new cruise collection. Council has agreed to lift the alcohol ban for the night, so public access to Shelly Beach may be restricted that evening. And in sport, according to the ABC, this year’s Sydney Marathon winner, Peres Jepchirchir, has been provisionally banned after a positive test for EPO.

On the walk: South Steyne (1:42)

Speaking of finish lines, see those marquees and fences? That looks like the finish area for today’s ultra.

The building behind that green hoarding went up in 1919 as Manly’s original Beach House, a tea house and change rooms for day-trippers. Later it was an info kiosk and then a restaurant, The Pantry. Now it’s being done up and reborn as the Beach House again, apparently in time for summer.

And there it is, Manly Beach. That headland at the far end is Queenscliff, and that’s where we’re heading.

Remember that big construction site at the very start of the walk? That whole block is the Royal Far West site, being rebuilt as a project called Aurora. Royal Far West is a children’s charity that’s been here since the 1920s. Back in 1924, the Reverend Stanley Drummond started bringing kids from the far west of New South Wales to Manly, so they could see the ocean for the first time. The new buildings are by Glenn Murcutt and Angelo Candalepas, and the apartment sales fund health care for country kids. They had to pump out more than 922 megalitres of groundwater just to dig the basement. That’s about 370 Olympic pools.

Bondi to Manly Ultra (3:23)

Now, the Bondi to Manly Ultra. The solo runners left the Bondi Pavilion at half past four this morning, in the dark. They go round South Head and Watsons Bay, past the Opera House, over the Harbour Bridge, through the bush at Middle Head, along the Spit to Manly walk, do a loop of North Head, and then finish on this sand. There are relay teams too, and it sold out this year. The first finishers are expected from about half past ten, presentations are at one thirty, and the finish stays open until half past seven tonight. If you’re around mid-morning, come down and cheer them in.

Surf + Sound festival (4:06)

Surf + Sound is Manly’s brand-new festival, running over three weekends until the 1st of November, mostly down at Manly Wharf. Tonight it’s Skegss at the Felons Barrel Room, eighteen plus, doors at seven. During the day there’s a free art trail around the wharf by Jeremyville, with giant inflatables and sculptures, and five old Land Rover Defenders being painted live by Aussie artists at Manly Cove.

Ghosts of Manly (4:40)

Time for today’s Ghosts of Manly. Back in 1902, a local newspaper man, William Gocher, went for a swim right here in broad daylight, which was actually illegal at the time. Within a few years the ban was gone, and Aussie beach culture as we know it took off.

These huge trees are Norfolk Island pines, Manly’s trademark. They were planted along the beachfront from the late 1800s, and they handle salt spray that most trees can’t. Still to come: what’s on this week, and your surf and weather report.

North Steyne (6:15)

We’re up at North Steyne now. It’s a bit quieter up this end, and it’s popular with the surfers.

That lovely yellow building with the red roof is the North Steyne Surf Life Saving Club, one of the oldest surf clubs in the world. Those volunteers in red and yellow have been patrolling this beach for over a century. If you see them out today, say thanks.

And across the road, more scaffolding. Construction is everywhere along this stretch. Just up the road at 92 North Steyne, a new five-storey apartment building has just been approved.

Queenscliff (8:30)

Final stretch: we’re coming into Queenscliff, at the north end of the beach. Manly, North Steyne and Queenscliff are all one long beach, about one and a half kilometres, just with different names along the way.

Spotted: junior surf comp (10:00)

See the maroon tents? That’s the Queenscliff Boardriders Club, the local surf club, and today they’re running a Surftag event for the under-fourteens. Surftag is a tag-team format, so it’s fast, loud and great fun to watch.

These kids are the next generation of Manly surfers.

Coming up this week (10:40)

Coming up this week in Manly. Tomorrow, Babe Rainbow play the wharf, and the under-eighteens hit the water at Queenscliff. On Friday, Skunkhour play Surf + Sound. And next weekend is the big finale: the Boardrider Battle on Manly Beach, with a legends heat on Saturday featuring Joel Parkinson, Mark Occhilupo and Layne Beachley, plus free shows from Yolanda Be Cool and Winston Surfshirt. And it’s Halloween on Saturday too.

Beach report: surf & weather (11:08)

Now, your beach report. Clearing skies this morning, a top of twenty-four, with nor’easterly winds of fifteen to twenty-five k’s kicking in this afternoon, and a chance of a storm late in the day. The surf’s around a metre and a half to two metres from the east-nor’east and glassy early, so get in this morning. The water’s about twenty degrees. High tide was around seven thirty this morning, with low tide around one thirty this afternoon. And as always, swim between the red and yellow flags.

Question of the day (11:39)

Question of the day: would you ever run eighty kilometres? Tell me your longest run in the comments. Don’t forget to like and subscribe, and I’ll see you on the next one.

Walk with me from South Steyne to Queenscliff as the Bondi to Manly Ultra heads for the finish line, the Surf + Sound festival rolls into its second weekend, and the Queenscliff Boardriders juniors hit the water.

WaypostVR: Beautiful Places to Unwind After a Hard Day

Most VR games want something from you.
What I want is to put the headset on and be somewhere else. Somewhere beautiful, where nothing is chasing me and nothing is counting down. So I started building it.

WaypostVR is a collection of beautiful places to stand in. No enemies, no fail states, nothing you have to do. You can do things if you want: fish, cook, paddle a canoe, ring a temple bell. Or you can just sit on a deck and watch the light change.

This post is a guided tour. If you’re reading along while I play, each stop starts with a cue saying where I am and what I’m about to show.

You arrive on a small floating island at golden hour, above a sea of clouds. It’s the waypost: the place between places.

The menu shows every destination as a big card, eight to a page. Point at one, pull the trigger, and you fade out and arrive somewhere new. The music button in the corner lets you pick what plays here. My favourite is shuffle, which mixes in songs from the jukeboxes and radios around the world.

2. Bora Bora: your own overwater villa

In the game: pick Bora Bora. Walk the boardwalk to Fare Waypost, the first villa on the left, then go out to the patio and the plunge pool.

This is where it all started. A turquoise lagoon with real-time caustics rippling over the sand, reef sharks and fish under the boardwalk, and Mount Otemanu behind it all.

Your villa is the biggest bungalow in the resort. Inside there’s a canopy bed, a jukebox playing island songs, and a glass floor panel over the lagoon. Out the back there’s a plunge pool that doubles as a spa: one button for bubbles and steam, one that cycles the underwater lights. Click the water and you sit in it, looking out over the lagoon.

In the game: turn the carved dial by the patio doorway to take it from day to sunset to night.

There’s a lot to do here if you want to: fish off the patio, grill your catch on the BBQ, ride the jetski round the lagoon, snorkel down to an old shipwreck, or make cocktails for guests at the tiki bar. None of it is required. Some nights I just turn the dial to sunset and sit in the pool.

The jetski waits on the beach near your boardwalk.

3. Kyoto in spring

In the game: pick Kyoto in Spring. Climb the steps under the torii, follow the cherry avenue to the pond, and cross the vermilion bridge.

A temple strolling garden. You climb stone steps under a tunnel of torii gates, then walk an avenue of cherry blossom down to a still pond with koi, lily pads and a torii standing in the water.

This is the place for small, quiet rituals. Ring the great bell. Rake the gravel in the zen garden. Hang a wish on the ema board. Whisk matcha in the tea house, set floating lanterns on the pond, and bow to the deer.

In the game: use the sign board by the gate to switch to autumn, then to night.

The board changes the time of day (afternoon, sunset, night hanami with fireflies, morning mist) and the season, from spring blossom to autumn maples. The same garden feels completely different each way.

4. Alpenglow Spa

In the game: pick Alpenglow Spa. Walk through the indoor pools, then out to the terrace and the infinity pool.

A thermal spa on a cliff above a glacier valley in the Swiss Alps. Inside, turquoise pools wind between planter islands, and the water throws shimmering caustic light onto the ceiling. Outside there’s an infinity pool, a cedar hot tub, an ice plunge, and a panoramic sauna where you can throw water on the stones.

Grab a steaming tea from the counter, find a lounger and do nothing at all.

In the game: use the brass panel by the terrace door to go to blue hour, then night.

At night the stars come out and the aurora rolls over the peaks. The walnut speaker plays Nordic spa music. This is the one I go to when I really need to switch off.

5. Honeysuckle Cottage

In the game: pick Honeysuckle Cottage. Walk up the garden path, then around to the koi pond.

A thatched stone cottage in the Cotswolds, in a summer cottage garden full of lupins and foxgloves. Bees, butterflies, robins, blackbirds and blue tits go about their business around you.

Go inside and there’s a fire, a kettle and a lamp. Outside you can feed the koi, sit on the bench, lie in the hammock, turn on the radio on the patio or ring the wind chime by the door. It’s the smallest destination, and one of the most relaxing.

6. Loon Lake Lodge

In the game: pick Loon Lake Lodge. Start on the dock by the floatplane, then walk up into the lodge and sit by the fire.

A log lodge on the granite shore of a turquoise lake in the Canadian Rockies, at the end of summer. You arrive on the dock beside the yellow Beaver floatplane you flew in on, its propeller still winding down.

Inside there’s a river-rock fireplace already burning, a leather sofa, and a mug of hot chocolate on the coffee table (click it for a sip). Through the glass gable you look straight up the lake.

In the game: use the sky board on the deck to try northern lights, then deep winter.

The sky board changes the season as well as the sky: misty dawn, northern lights, a thunderstorm, golden autumn larches, and deep winter, when the lake freezes and you can skate on it. You can paddle the canoe, fish off the dock, or climb into the floatplane and let the autopilot fly you on a tour past the falls and up to a glacier lake. Loons call across the water the whole time.

7. Cappadocia sunrise

In the game: pick Cappadocia Sunrise. Look around the launch field first, then pull the burner handle above you and climb.

You start standing in the wicker basket of your own hot-air balloon on a launch field in Turkey, in the blue hour before dawn. Balloons all around you glow as their burners fire.

Pull the burner and you rise. The sun comes up as you fly, over valleys banded cream and rose and thousands of fairy chimneys, with about a hundred other balloons drifting on the same winds. The wind changes direction with height, so climbing and sinking is how you steer, just like the real thing.

If you’d rather not fly, the pilot takes off on their own and you can just watch. Scatter rose petals over the side, pop the champagne and drink a toast to the sunrise.

8. Cedar Hollow

In the game: pick Cedar Hollow. Walk the path from the porch to the pond, then over to the Kombi van.

This one’s personal. It’s my off-grid dream homestead, built in VR before I build it for real.

A clearing among towering firs, with a snow-capped volcano beyond the meadow. There’s a teal tiny home with solar panels and a rain tank, a natural swimming pond, a geodesic dome with cushions and a record player, a glasshouse, chickens, beehives, and a dog who follows you around (point at it to give it a pat).

The Kombi: climb in, lie on the bed under the skylight and change the lava lamp's colour.

You can collect eggs, pick vegetables and grill them on the BBQ, chop firewood for the hot tub, or just lie in the hammock between two firs.

In the game: use the painted board by the porch to switch to firefly night, then rainy day.

My favourite is the rainy day, with rain drumming on the tiny home’s tin roof.

Everything else

There are more destinations than I could fit in one tour. Here’s a quick look at the rest.

Neon HeightsA penthouse loft 180 m above a rainy neon city. Change the LED mood, put a record on.

Uluru at SunsetA viewing deck facing the rock. Campfire, telescope, a field of light and desert storms.

Ame SushiA tiny conveyor-belt sushi bar down a rainy Tokyo backstreet.

VeyraAn alien world in low gravity, with a ringed gas giant, floating islands and singing crystals.

Miniature WorldA whole alpine country at 1:10 in a Victorian glass hall, with trains and RC cars.

MirageA desert arts festival. Ride your bike out to the art and stay for the burn.

Oakmere CastleAn archery tournament at golden hour. Targets and apples only.

Grand SumoA ringside cushion at a tournament. Every bout is simulated live, so no two are the same.

Safari CampA tent camp on the Serengeti at golden hour. About this one, see below.

The one that breaks the rules

I said no killing, and I meant it. But I also asked my kids what they’d want in the game, and their answer was a safari where you can hunt. So Safari Camp has a rifle.

It’s not one I wanted to make, and it doesn’t fit the vision. I made it for them. I kept it as gentle as I could: an animal you hit lies down, glows gold and dissolves into fireflies. There’s no blood and nothing fights back. You can also leave the rifle on its rack and simply watch the herds cross the plain at golden hour.

The same honesty goes for a couple of other things. You can fish in a few places, and the Bora Bora jetski has an optional lap race against the clock. None of it is ever required, and nothing starts unless you choose it.

How it’s made

Everything in WaypostVR is generated from code: the scenes, the 3D models, the textures and the sound.

Unity 6 with HDRP, running on a Quest over Link or SteamVR. It’s also playable on a regular PC with mouse and keyboard.

Claude Code as my co-developer, writing the C# that builds each destination.

Blender, scripted to build models without opening the editor.

ComfyUI with Flux for textures and menu art.

Sonic Pi for every song in the game, written as code.

ElevenLabs for the sound effects and ambience.

Building it this way means I can try an idea in an evening, throw it away if it doesn’t feel right, and keep the ones that make me want to stay a little longer.

What’s next

Aurora Nights in Iceland is coming soon. After that, I just want to keep making beautiful places to land in after a long day.
